ast Early College High School (EECHS) opened its doors in Fall 2006 through a transformative partnership between the Houston Independent School District (HISD), Houston Community College (HCC), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Texas High School Project. Just one year later, the school earned an “Exemplary” rating from the Texas Education Agency, setting a high standard from the start.
In 2009, EECHS moved into its current facility on the HCC Felix Fraga campus, located at 220 N. Milby Street. The building is named in honor of Leonel Castillo, a Latino community activist in Houston.
EECHS was awarded its first National Blue Ribbon Award in 2012 by the U.S. Department of Education. In 2018, EECHS earned its second National Blue Ribbon, solidifying its place among the nation’s top-performing schools.
Situated in Houston’s historic East End, East Early has built a strong, supportive culture and proud traditions. Guided by the early college model, the school provides students with the unique opportunity to graduate in four years with both a high school diploma and up to 60 hours of college credit.
EECHS places a strong focus on academic preparation, social-emotional support, and equity. As Falcons, our students soar toward success with purpose and perseverance. At East Early College High School, our mission is anchored in rigor, relevance, and relationships, ensuring every student is prepared to excel in college and beyond.
East Early currently serves 460 students and their families.
